Language Arts 1-2 is a comprehensive curriculum that focuses on improving writing, reading, communication, listening, and study skills. Students will develop and expand these skills through formal and impromptu writing assignments, exposure to multiple literary genres, weekly vocabulary exercises, active communication-building exercises, and activities utilizing research skills.
Mrs. Garraway encourages her students to be independent and creative thinkers. In order to nurture independent and creative thinking, students are presented with a multitude of classroom and school resources, which allows students to hone in on written and verbal skills. Students are expected to support their ideas clearly and concisely through the use of written and verbal language. Practice in verbal and written expression is done with a hands on approach in an active learning environment. Students are involved through individual and group work, class presentations, discussions, library research, and technology utilization.
Course Objectives
- Improve writing skills through the mastery of the writing process and completion of both formal and impromptu writing assignments.
- Broaden reading skills through exposure to multiple genres including nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and drama.
- Expand vocabulary, both in recognition and usage, through weekly vocabulary exercises and tests.
- Heighten communication skills through active listening exercises, large and small group projects, and oral presentations.
